Few things frustrate a marketplace seller more than waking up to a suppressed listing. You check the seller forums, and support keeps repeating the same phrase: "your main image does not have a pure white background." The photo looks white to you. Your product is on a white seamless backdrop. What is going on?
The short answer is that Amazon's image checker is not judging by human eyes. It samples the pixels at the edges of your image and compares them against an exact value: RGB 255, 255, 255. If your "white" is actually 250, 250, 250 — or if a soft shadow, a reflection, or a translucent PNG edge bleeds into the frame — the checker can flag the image, and the listing can be temporarily removed from search until you fix it. This guide walks through the exact rules, the reasons sellers fail, and a repeatable checklist you can run before every upload.
1. The exact rules that matter
Amazon's product image guide (help page G1881) sets out the main image requirements. The parts that cause the most suppressions are:
- Pure white background: RGB values of 255, 255, 255. This is a hard number, not a "close enough" number.
- Product fills roughly 85% of the frame: the image should show the product at 85% of the total area. Too small and it looks lost; too large and it may be cropped in thumbnails.
- Minimum size: the longest side must be between 500 and 10,000 pixels. At 1,000 pixels or more, Amazon enables the zoom feature — the industry recommendation is 1,600px or higher for quality zoom.
- No text, logos, watermarks, badges or props: the main image must be the product alone (with only what is included in the sale).
- Format: JPEG is recommended; PNG and TIFF are accepted. The image must be in RGB color mode.
Two details are easy to miss. First, a transparent PNG is not the same as a white background. If your cutout has transparent corners, the checker may not register the background as white. Second, the 85% rule applies to the bounding box of the product — a tiny product in the middle of a huge white canvas will fail.
2. Why "white" photos still get rejected
Based on the most common complaints in seller communities, suppressions usually come from one of these four causes:
- Off-white whites. A backdrop photographed under warm or cool light often lands at RGB 245–252. It looks white, but it is not 255. This is the single most common cause.
- Shadows. A visible cast shadow under the product makes the background non-uniform. Even a "barely visible" shadow can be picked up by the pixel scan.
- Reflections and gradients. A glossy floor reflection or a gradient from white to grey reads as a non-white background.
- Transparent PNG edges. Semi-transparent edge pixels get composited against whatever the checker uses as its backdrop, producing a fringe that fails the scan.
White products are a special case: a white towel or a white bottle on a white background can literally "disappear." The policy-compliant answer is to add a subtle contact shadow — Amazon's guidelines allow minimal shadows around the product — so the edges of the product read clearly against the background.
3. The fastest safe workflow
You do not need Photoshop to produce compliant images consistently. A repeatable local workflow looks like this:
- Remove the background with a tolerance-based remover (our Background Remover tool). For product shots on solid or near-solid backdrops this gives a clean cutout in seconds.
- Place the cutout on a true white canvas (RGB 255,255,255) using the White Background Maker. This eliminates off-white backdrops and stray shadows in one step.
- For white products, add a light contact shadow so the product separates from the background — still compliant, because it is a minimal shadow.
- Export at the right size. Resize to at least 1,000px on the longest side; 1,600px is better for zoom.
- Run the Amazon Photo Checker before uploading. It samples the border area for whiteness, measures the product's fill ratio, and verifies the size — then it tells you pass or fail and can generate a fixed version with one click.
Working locally matters here for two reasons: your unreleased product images never leave your device, and you avoid per-image fees from cloud-based tools. Every step above runs entirely in your browser.
4. A checklist to paste into your SOP
- Background: RGB 255,255,255 at the edges (no shadows, no gradients, no reflections).
- Product: centered, complete, one instance, ~85% of frame, no text or overlays.
- Size: longest side ≥ 1,000px (recommend 1,600px+), ≤ 10,000px, RGB mode, JPEG or PNG.
- White products: add a subtle contact shadow so edges are visible.
- Run the checker, fix what it flags, re-check, then upload.
Suppressions are rarely permanent. The fix is usually a five-minute re-export once you understand the pixel-level rule. Keep this checklist handy, and your main images will stop being the reason your traffic disappears.
